Office Hours
Office Hours Wrap-up: Fran Hauser “Distill ideas. Be concise.”
|
Yesterday afternoon, The Levo League was honored to host a very special guest for Office Hours: Fran Hauser, the President of Digital in Time Inc’s Style & Entertainment and Lifestyle divisions. Fran, speaking to us over interactive video from her own office in Midtown, spoke to us about the important lessons she’s learned in her career. She also took fifteen minutes of questions from Office Hours participants. Here are some of our favorite moments from yesterday’s Office Hours:
On information overload: “I can’t believe that I’m saying this, but
most of my news is coming through Twitter.”
On promoting GMs: “Being connected within the space is what I look for in a potential GM. And having colleagues outside the company who can develop interesting partnerships”
“The ability to think creatively and to bring people together is crucial.”
On transitioning print to digital: “With PEOPLE.com, I had to make sure I didn’t do
anything on the website that was harmful to the already long-existing print brand.”
On what stands out in entry-level employees: “The ability to think
bigger picture. To be pro-active.”
“I appreciate employees who are proactive and come to me with ideas”
On getting along with colleagues: “Anything that you can do to be helpful to
people. It goes a long way to grow trust & relationships.”
“Relational intelligence. Be a person who’s likeable, someone who
people want to be with.”
“Anything you can do to be helpful and likable to people goes a long way”
On working with colleagues: ” Distill ideas, research, results, whatever – down to one page. I appreciate when someone takes the time and energy to be concise. The more you can simplify things, the better. Always think: what are the key takeaways here?”
On entering Big 4: “Spent most of that first year literally getting coffee
for people. Lots of humility goes into that. Embrace it.”
On mobile: “How is content consumed on a smart phone? Desktop is
lunchtime. Smartphones are 7am and 9 at night.”
On risks: “I’d focus on my gut. Every key decision in my life follows
that…I tend to have a pretty good instinct.”
On her team: “My job is making sure that my team is aligned, and that we’re
learning from each other.”
On her career: “I took an unconventional path. In 22 years, I spent the first 8 in finance and
accounting-I had numerous different roles.”
