On that list was Sugar Inc’s Savvy Sugar, which as an offshoot of Sugar’s many media channels has grown to represent a significant resource for young women who are serious about learning professional skills. From interviews with Bloomingdale’s Personal Shoppers to Oprah’s personal assistant, they’ve got a range of high-profile perspectives and valuable career development content. But that’s not all: Sugar also began its foray into curated e-commerce with its recently rolled out monthly Must Have Bag, which at $35 a month sends its editor’s top picks of beauty products, home decor, fashion, fun, and fitness products.

We heard from Lisa Sugar, founder of PopSugar and Sugar Inc., on why she believes that her site-turned-empire has struck such a resonant chord with Gen Y women.

L(L): What is your best piece of advice for Gen Y women searching for their dream jobs?

LS: Stay positive and start doing the job you want to be hired for. Even if you are currently working, find some spare time to do anything you can on your own so you can show you are making an effort to learn skills for the dream job you are hoping to land someday.

Why do you think people connect with your site?

It’s relatable, fun and informative. People want to take a break and relax with fun pictures, learn something or they are searching for something in particular. Once they find us, we are entertaining and have lots of eye candy so they come back for more.

What is your favorite section of the Sugar sites?

That’s like asking if I have a favorite daughter! I love so many things about the Sugar sites and have specific examples for each. Here are just a few of my favorite examples – I love Class FitSugar’s 10 minute exercise videos, I love PopSugar’s speed and galleries, I love TresSugar’s nostalgia stories, YumSugar’s Get the Dish videos , the Buzz on BuzzSugar and BellaSugar’s smart beauty tips. And who doesn’t love cute Pet pictures? I could look at those galleries all day long.
