Joy Deangdeelert Cho is a graphic designer, blogger, and food enthusiast who worked with numerous fashion clients in New York before launching her own business, Oh Joy! in 2005. Launched in September 2005, the Oh Joy! blog covers inspiration & design with a focus on her favorite things: design, fashion, and food. Joy hosted Office Hours last week and shared some of her personal advice. Here is the recap of her Office Hours:
“I was very much a planner and I really felt like there were things I wanted to accomplish. I spent a lot of my initial years worrying so much about my future and what would happen and not taking it as much day by day.”
As we get older, we find ourselves still learning how important it is to pace ourselves. Yes, planning ahead is great, but at the same time focusing on what’s important right now both in your personal life and in your career make things feel a little bit better.
Do not worry about failing. Of course no one wants to fail, and no one likes being fired from jobs either. It’s the failures that inspire you to go out and get something better. They also give you the valuable opportunity to look at yourself and figure out what you could have done to make things work out the way you wanted them to. Missed opportunities open up the door to better opportunities and help you recognize how you can improve in preparation for them.
Today there are millions of blogs to be inspired by, and people are able to start one knowing what a good formula is to become successful very quickly. In starting one, you should definitely go into it with a focus. Check out what’s out there and identify how you can offer something different and unique. If you want to encompass a few different things, stick to two or three and make sure that they’re aesthetically similar. Cohesiveness in style is key in bringing multiple things together! If you have a topic that you’re really passionate about and want to share with the world, choose something that you can regularly produce content on and won’t get tired of. If you love it and are dedicated to it, then you’ll easily find the means to be creative with it, and people will notice.
Starting a business:
“I would never tell somebody to leave their job in the very beginning stages of a new business.”
It is most important to remember that it is great to have a full time job in the current economy. If you want to change career paths or launch a business, start this new project on the side and stick with the job you already have. For example, if what you want to do requires experience or studies that you don’t have, take some classes in your free time. You need to see what this new career is all about and find an opportunity to begin practicing it and get better at it. If you leave your job, you won’t have the same paycheck and insurance so it is crucial to weigh the cost/benefit of your decision. Becoming self-employed is not for everyone, so it is important to test it out and determine if it is viable for you before you give up what you already have.
Valuing Your Time:
“What I have realized is that my time if so valuable, even more so than before. I’ve really learned how to work smarter and not harder, as well as choose quality over quantity.”
It isn’t fair to have a client or a co-worker waiting for you to follow through on something when you can’t spend as much time at your desk as you might like to. Even if you love what you’re doing, you need to be mindful of your limits. It might help to try to work on projects where you can set the schedule, are more flexible or self-initiated. It is possible to say no to things and still feel fulfilled professionally and also be able to put energy into your personal life and keep that one of your priorities.
